RF Fiber Optic Link.

Abstract

A fiber optic link which sets the state of the art (July 1982) in direct optical source modulation in passing a RF carrier and its associated modulation was developed under this Laboratory Director's funded program to Harris Corporation. The 1 kilometer long link has a 600 MHz passband and operates between 4.4 to 5.0 GHz. The gain flatness across the band was measured at +or- 1.5 db at a modulation depth of 65%. The input/output VSWR is 1.5 to 1db. The link employs a 3 state amplifier in the APD receiver and has provided a S/N of 48 db measured over a 300 KHz bandwidth. The S/N can be further improved by additional amplifier stages. Optical componentry within the link includes an injection laser diode operating at a wavelength of 840 nm and a single mode fiber with bandwith greater than 7 GHz and a core size of 6 micron.
