Inhalation Toxicity of Manganese Dioxide and a Magnesium Oxide-Manganese Dioxide Mixture.

Abstract

This report describes: (1) The development, characterization and use of a fluidizing bed aerosol generator; (2) Characterization of the mass and particle size distribution of aerosolized manganese dioxide (MnO2) in 1.4 cu m inhalation chambers; and (3) The results of a range-finding inhalation toxicity study of rats exposed to manganese dioxide dust. The major biologic response observed in the range-finding study was the suggestion of long-term pulmonary fibrosis. Recommendations of doses and biologic endpoints for a subchronic study are made.
