A Review of the Pollution Abatement Programs Relating to the Petroleum Refinery Industry in the Great Lakes Basin

Abstract

This report describes the findings of the Task Force regarding effluent quality improvement, analytical protocols, trends of pollutant loading, and compliance with jurisdictional effluent limitation. It also discusses the petroleum refineries located in Areas of Concern, as defined by the Board. In summary, the Task Force concludes that since 1976 there has been a significant improvement in the quality of the wastewater being discharged from petroleum refineries to the Great Lakes Basin. It also believes that additional efforts should be made to evaluate the possible long-term adverse effects of potentially toxic substances known to be present in refinery effluents in low quantities.
