New Disinfection Agents for Water
Abstract
The purpose of this work was to determine the feasibility of using organic N-chloramine agents for water disinfection in the field to possibly replace or supplement the free chlorine agent HTH which is currently used. The model N-chloramine agent chosen for this work was 3-chloro-4,4-dimethyl-2- oxazolidinone (Agent I). A variety of comparisons of Agent I and HTH were made which included their actions on bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, organic impurities, and water treatment materials and their stabilities in solution and the solid state. Variable studied were concentration of the agents, pH, temperature, and water quality. It was found that Agent I exceeds HTH in stability under all conditions, often dramatically. Agent I does not damage materials or cause the formation of toxic trihalomethanes to the extent of HTH. On the other hand, HTH is a faster-acting bactericide, virucide, and fungicide for the species studied; Agent I performs as well as or better than HTH against the two species of protozoa studied. It is recommended that Agent I be considered as a replacement for, or at least a supplement to, HTH for field applications for water containing appreciable organic load and that work be continued to find a more efficient N-chloramine disinfectant.
