MODULAB: Deployment and Environmental Test Report.

Abstract

MODULAB is the short title for the project whose objective is to provide environmentally protected clinical laboratory equipment for a suitably staffed shipboard medical department. The major considerations that make shipboard circumstances different from those faced in a hospital are that equipment will be exposed to levels of vibration, moisture, salt, and temperature extremes not found in a hospital and for which most devices are not designed. MODULAB consists of four commercial, hospital-type pieces of laboratory equipment-a blood cell counter, a blood gas analyzer, a sodium/potassium analyzer, and a clinical chemistry analyzer-mounted in a shock and vibration absorbing case. This equipment has slight internal modifications. The MODULAB project demonstrated that with minor augmentation and other considerations, commercial medical equipment can be used in a shipboard setting.
