Abstract
On October 2, 1981, the President announced his decision to cancel the M-X Multiple Protective Shelter (MPS) basing system. The Air Force was, at that time, working to prepare a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the MPS site selection process. This preliminary FEIS captures the environmental data and analysis in the document that was nearing completion when the President decided to deploy the M-X system is a different manner. Areas studied were in Nevada, Utah, Texas, and New Mexico. Topics considered included: Definition of geotechnically suitable areas; Geologic setting--Slope and topography; Mining and Minerals--Current and historic mining, Mining employment and income, Mining claim and leasing activity, and Mineral resources; M-X impacts--Land withdrawal, Access conflicts, Competition for labor, Preemption of land, and Interference with existing mine operations; Seismicity--Tectonic and seismic setting, Quaternary faults, Historic earthquakes and surface rupture, and Seismic hazards in the Great Basin; Soils--Physical and agronomic properties, and Water erosion; Paleontology; Energy resources; and Leolites.
