Abstract
On October 2, 1981, the President announced his decision to cancel the M-X Multiple Protective Shelter (MPS) basing system. The Air Force was, at the time, working to prepare a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the MPS site selection process. Areas studied included Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Texas. Topics examined in this volume include: Change Processes, Effects, and Quality of Life; Quality of Life and Adaptation; Quality of Life and M-X-Related Social Groupings--Existing local residents, Newcomer direct and indirect M-X workers, and Air Force; Quality of Life in Rural Areas: Community satisfaction; The Boom Town and the Bust Phase; Quality of Life Impacts; and Potential Mitigation Strategies for Preserving community cohesion; for Institutions, schools, government and local finance; for Public Services, Health, police and fire and social services, utilities, transportation; and Effects Management for Boom Towns.
