Properties of Chirped Grating Lenses in Optical Waveguides.

Abstract

Chirped gratings can be used as lenses on optical waveguides. Efficiency as high as 85% can be obtained. However, combined high efficiency and low F-number or combined high efficiency and large angular field of view can only be obtained with careful considerations given to the design, the materials and the fabrication process. In this report, we will summarize the research results obtained at UCSD on the fundamental limitations of their performance in efficiency, angular field of view and F-number caused by diffraction, materials properties and fabrication techniques for various lens designs and F-numbers. Originator-supplied keywords include: Chirped grating, and waveguide lens.
