Special Flood Hazard Information Report, Crane Creek, Salisbury, North Carolina.

Abstract

The City of Salisbury N.C. is planning to annex a portion of the area which is subject to flooding from Crane Creek. This report covers the proposed annexation area and includes additional coverage along reaches which appear to have future development potential. Although there is some urban development in the flood plain of Crane Creek, most of the land adjacent to the creek is presently used for agricultural purposes. It is likely that much of this land will com under pressure for future urban development. In the past, several large floods have occurred along Crane Creek, and this study indicates that even larger floods are possible. This report was prepared for the use of local and state officials in planning and management decisions concerning the utilization of flood plain areas. Information in this report includes maps showing the Floodway or the area within the flood flow. The maps also show the Floodway Fringe areas which are subject to flooding but can be developed without significantly increasing flood problems, provided the development is elevated or otherwise protected from flood damage. As a guide for construction within the floodway fringe areas, the report contains data on expected elevations of future floods and recommended minimum elevations for floor level construction and location of other water damageable facilities.
