Wigner Distribution Function as a LOFARGRAM with Unlimited Resolution Simultaneously in Time and Frequency,

Abstract

The purpose of this note is to provide a pedagogical introduction to the so-called Wigner distribution function , and to demonstrate that what is generally known is not necessarily correct: the Wigner distribution function displays a signal as a function of both frequency and time, but in a manner that is not resolution limited in either domain. We think it possible that the Wigner distribution can be used to provide a graphic realization of passive sonar signals that is sufficiently close in character to conventional lofargrams so that their body of accumulated wisdom will still be applicable, yet provide significant new detailed information on the sonar signal. Keywords include: Sonar; Lofargram; Wigner distribution function.
