Development of a Calculation Procedure for the Determination of Tow Resistance (Unabridged Report).
Abstract
A method of calculating the resistance of a ship being towed is necessary in order to calculate the maximum allowable towing speed for a given tow and towline and the loads for the sizing of the towing gear. To develop such a method, available methods of calculating hull, locked propeller and wind resistance and added resistance in waves of a tow were investigated. With results of the investigation of these four resistance components, a new step by step calculation procedure for determining tow resistance was developed. A correlation study was conducted to compare the results obtained using the new procedure with the method currently used by the U.S. Navy and with data obtained from full scale tests. General conclusions are reached as to the accuracy and applicability of the new method for determining tow resistance developed in this report.
