Design and Analysis of a Complete Relational Interface for a Multi-Backend Database System.

Abstract

Organizations of all types are becoming increasingly dependent on the operation of database management systems based on one of the three generally known data models (i.e., network, hierarchical or relational) for the centralized control of operational data. As an alternative to the development of separate, stand-alone systems for specific models, recent research has proposed a system designed to support multiple data models and model-based languages as if the system is a heterogeenous collection of database systems. This proposal is based on the existence of a simple and powerful data model to which three well-known models can be mapped. This model, the attribute-based data model is the data model upon which the Multi-Backend Database System (MDBS), a software database machine, is based. This thesis concentrates on the language interface aspects of implementing MDBS as a kernel for the support of relational databases. In particular, this thesis provides the design and analysis of an interface between the relational query language (SQL) and the attribute-based data language (ABDL). Originator-supplied keywords include: Database management systems, multi-backend data system, attribute-based data language, relational data language, relationaal interface, database kernel, Computer programs.
