Proceedings of the Symposium on R & D for Weapon Support and Logistics Held on 11-12 April 1984 at Ramada Hotel, Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia.
Abstract
The DoD Logistics R&D Working Group is currently directing its efforts toward five objectives: 1. Achieve self-sustaining capability at the unit level. (Air Force), 2. Provide survivable logistics C2 to the unit level. (Air Force), 3. Improve battlefield material handling. (Army), 4. Automate low-volume spares production. (Navy), 5. Accelerate transition from paper to electronic information systems. (Navy). R&D investments to meet these objectives can produce a near-term, high payoff of increased force readiness within constrained logistics budgets. Consequently, these five objectives were selected to be the focus of the NSIA Symposium on R&D for Weapon Support and Logistics held at the Ramada Hotel in Alexandria, Virginia on 11-12 April 1984. The symposium consisted of introductory presentations by key service personnel, panel sessions on each Logistics R&D objective and a general wrap-up session. The keynote speaker, Mr. Robert Hager, V.P.-Engineering at Boeing Aerospace Company, identified the critical element common to all five Logistics R&D objectives as being the use of integrated digital data systems in weapon system development, operation, maintenance and training.
