Evaluating Computer-Communication Networks with Simulation Techniques.
Abstract
This thesis proposes a methodology for evaluating computer-communication networks with simulation techniques. The methodology reflects the developmental life-cycle of simulation studies. After the requirements of this methodology are discussed, it is presented as a set of twelve steps. To support the methodology, a package of six programs is designed, implemented, and analyzed. The design proceeds top-down with a functional analysis, system design, and detailed design. The package's implementation allow the analyst to model the data transfers within message or packet-switched value-added networks. The programs support a variety of simulation techniques including preliminary system modeling, optimal-response detection, and sensitivity analysis. These techniques are based on statistics, numerical analysis, and simulation theory. The implementation is analyzed for its time and space requirements with both 'order of' and algebraic expressions. To complete the analysis, the methodology is applied to a sample problem. Future success of the methodology--especially its optimization of guidelines--will depend on the availability of larger computer time resources. Originator supplied keywords include: Simulation; Computer-communication networks; Network models; Optimal-response detection; Sensitivity Analysis; and Network simulators.
