Strategic Imagination: The Lost Dimension of Strategic Studies.

Abstract

This thesis is a survey of the range of methodologies from the purely quantitive methods such as systems analysis, operations analysis, and operations research toward methods which incorporate other information, such as trend extrapolation, economic analysis (as it pertains to defense) and the Delphi Technique. A brief introduction to the utility of scenario construction precedes an examination of the wargame; both useful in many ways to the military planner. This is an attempt to illustrate the quality and worth of the quantitative methods, as well as point out the need for the open mind when considering defense matters. Proven methodologies, the scientific method, and alternative courses must all be utilized in the technological war. Originator supplied keywords include: Strategic planning; Futures research; Scenario construction; War gaming; Methodologies.
