Investigation of Comparative Mosquito Breeding in Dredged Material Disposal Sites Used in the Maintenance Dredging of the Atlantic Intra-Coastal Waterway in South Carolina.

Abstract

The purpose of this contract was to complete a thorough study of diked dredged material disposal sites associated with the maintenance dredging of the Atlantic Intra-Coastal Waterway within the boundaries of the Charleston CE District. Observations of the substrate, drainage, vegetational and other physical and biological features of these disposal sites were made to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the extent of mosquito breeding associated with them. Observations of other types of saltmarsh habitats were made to provide comparative data. Field studies were conducted by aerial photographic surveillance of and on-site visits to all disposal areas within the Charleston CE District. Laboratory studies were conducted at The Citadel Biology Department. At the present time, there are no feasible alternative methods for the disposal of dredged material which could circumvent the need for diked disposal areas. Temporary (insecticidal) control of mosquito breeding in dredged material disposal habitats is currently the only practical method available to mosquito abatement programs in South Carolina.
