Detonation Velocity Measurements of the Explosives Detasheet C and Amatol

Abstract

The detonation velocities of the explosives Detasheet C and 80-20 Amatol were measured using resistance-wire gages. The techniques used to obtain reproducible results with these gages are described. The detonation velocity measured for 1.6 mm thick Detasheet C was 6.93 mm/micro second. The detonation velocity of powdered 80-20 Amatol was a function of charge thickness, measuring 2.32 mm/micro second, for a charge thickness of 6.4 mm, and 3.86 mm/micro second for a charge thickness of 20 mm.
