Electric Field Structure of Large Thunderstorm Complexes in the Vicinity of Cape Canaveral

Abstract

Extensive measurements of electric field components, radar cross- sections, thermal, and draft structure were made in and around large thunderstorms in central Florida during a previous flight program. Recent advances in analysis of the in-flight electric field data have been used to locate regions of localized charge concentrations in the large storm systems, thus providing guidance for possible real-time avoidance of zones of aircraft lightning strike hazard.
