Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), General

Abstract

A series of engineering tests designed to determine the technical performance of distance measuring systems and equipment is outlined in this test operation procedure (TOP). The only type of DME system treated in this TOP is the VOR/TACAN/DME. The following tests collectively constitute an engineering evaluation of DME to determine: (1) Range and Accuracy - The average inbound lock-on and outboard unlock range limits and frequency distribution of errors within the range limits; (2) Warmup - The time required for the test item to become operational after activation; (3) Influence of Weather - The effects of selected meteorological conditions on the performance of the test item. Additional keywords: VOR(Very high frequency Omnidirectional radio range, TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation), Interrogators, and Transponders.
