Ecological Baseline-Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site, Colorado.

Abstract

A baseline ecological assessment was conducted on Pinon Canyon Army training maneuver site in south-central Colorado during May 1983. Ecological variation was quantified within and between two major habitats: pinon-juniper woodland and shortgrass prairie. Extensive data were collected on soils (bulk density, texture, and soil strength), vegetation (diversity, abundance, density, and biomass), and birds and mammals (diversity, absolute and relative density, biomass, and guild structure). This report documents procedures used to obtain these data and summarizes the information obtained. This data base will serve as a source of information for evaluating impacts on these lands by tracked vehicle training which is scheduled to begin in 1985.
