Product Improvement Program for the M577 Fuze. Volume 2. Redesigned Escape Wheel and Lever

Abstract

The objective of this contract was to redesign the timer escape wheel and lever to make more efficient use of the input torque and to provide a locking feature for the timer spin detent after it spins out. This redesign reduced the undesirable effects of balloting during ballistics by eliminating mechanical interference in the escapement. Ballistic test results with the redesigned escape wheel and lever were excellent. The redesign of the timer spin detent system was dropped because a ballistic test program that could determine whether the redesigned spin detent solves the balloting program could not be found.
