Basic System Configuration Determination Study. Advanced Hig-Kill Indicator System.

Abstract

The passive HKI concept developed by General Electric is based on the use of a solid-state television camera on the firing vehicle and a position reference flashtube mounted on the target vehicle to measure the relative position of target and firing vehicle. Both camera and flashtube are filtered to exclude visible light and operate in the near-IR band. This basic measurement, which is performed at trigger pull in conjunction with measurements made by APLS, provides the basis for determining the impact location of an electronic analog of selected real Army rounds. In addition to describing the proposed HKI concept and the major alternative concepts considered, the report contains a series of technical memos which reveal some of the thought and evaluation that occurred during the course of the study. These memos frequently go into technical details in considerable depth and are referenced in the report text where appropriate. The technical memos are numbered from 1 to 17 and are included as Appendices A through Q.
