Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) Raster-to-Vector Analysis

Abstract

In this study a comprehensive evaluation was conducted of the analog map to digital cartographic vector data (A/V) conversion process. The evaluation consists of six major subsections: (1) development of an analog-to-vector conversion model which defines an objective framework for evaluation of systems which implement this process; (2) a study of raster-to-vector conversion algorithms and software implementations; (3) a study of current and projected A/V conversion procedures requirements at Defense Mapping Agency Hydrographic/Topographic and Aerospace Centers; (4) a study of state-of-the-art automated cartographic data capture systems; (5) development of a standard DMA A/V benchmark testing package and methodology; and (6) recommendations for future research and development. Additional keywords: Plotters; graphics; digital systems.
