The Department of Defense Report on the Technology Base and Support of University Research

Abstract

DOD recognizes the importance of the nations Scientific establishment to our future security. This establishment, a combination of our universities, industry, and in-house laboratories, requires continued attentiona to ensure that it is sustained at a sufficient level, and is of sufficient quality, to maintain our technological laes over potential adversaries. This report, prepared at the request of the Senate Committee on Armed SErvices, has addressed the DOD S&T program and has identified areas which need and are receiving special attention. Some relevant achievements accomplished or gprogress made in the program include: (1) Early development of lasers and incorporatng their unique capabilities into weapons systems; (2) Early development of integrated circuits and their application to mission critical capabilities in target detection and identification as well as weapon guidance; (3) Development of aircraft technology which provides substantially improved capabilities in maneuverability, flight and fire control, and firepower; (4) Significant progress in the development and fielding of chemical warfare which enables combat units to better survive and fight in a chemical warfare environment; and (5) Development of the carbon-carbon composite material nosetip for the TRIDENT D-5 re-entry vehicle.
