The Navy can Improve Material Management at Naval Shipyards.

Abstract

Material inventories at naval shipyards have increased sharply in recent years. Between 1979 and 1984, the inventory value almost doubled, from $250.8 million to $494.6 million. Direct material inventories, valued at about $280.8 million, contain industrial-type materials used in ship overhauls. Shop stores inventories, valued at about $213.8 million, generally contain more commonly used materials, such as paints, bearings, nuts, and bolts. GAO made this review to determine the effectiveness of material management activities at naval shipyards. In carrying out its review, GAO visited four of the eight naval shipyards. This report discusses several areas where improvements are needed. Additional keywords: planning; logistics management.
