The Determination of Dinitrotoluene in Single Base Propellants.

Abstract

Six single base gun propellants of three different types (AR 2206, NH and FNH) were analysed for dinitrotoluene by three different methods, viz titanous chloride reduction, gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In general, similar results were obtained by all three methods. Although any of the three methods can be used for the determination of dinitrotoluene, the HPLC method is recommended - the equipment is automated and microprocessor controlled, and analyses can be performed relatively quickly, with good precision and with the lowest relative standard deviation of the order of 0.3%. It is recommended that the HPLC method be adopted as a standard test method.
