The Effect of Metal Overlayers of Thermionic Dispenser Cathodes

Abstract

This study has been undertaken to further the understanding of the physics and chemistry of thermionic dispenser cathodes and to test a model for the mechanism of operation of these devices. The surface structure and work function of cathodes coated with a variety of metals has been investigated using surface analytical techniques, including Auger Electron Spectroscopy. The theoretical implications of the results are discussed. Keywords: Thermionic cathodes, dispenser cathodes, surface structure, metal overlayers, angle resolved Auger electron spectroscopy.
