Parameter Estimation in Communication System Tracking Satellite Observations.

Abstract

The estimation of parameters from a satellite communication system is often through the use of Kalman filtering. In this work the location of the eye of a hurricane is estimated from satellite observation. A comparison with a posteriori meteorologist's analysis was attempted. An adaptive gating scheme was employed in the filter to accommodate 'manueuvers' of the storm. The observations were at random intervals and also came from several different sources (aircraft and land based radar as well as satellite). Keywords include: Parameter estimation; and Kalman Filter.
