Obstacle Planning Simulation, Version 1.1: Design and Performance Analysis.

Abstract

Obstacle Planning Simulation (OPS) Version 1.1 was developed as a pilot model to demonstrate the benefits of using simulation programs on PLATO to teach combat engineer tactics. OPS 1.1 is an interactive, map-based, two-phase video game for a single player that models the effects of a combat engineer modifications to terrain via a limited set of obstacles. In phase 1, the player specifies and implements an obstacle plan of his/her own design in two to four blocks of time, each block representing 4 hr of real time in which to work on a barrier plan. In phase 2, the player becomes a passive observer as an enemy mechanized infantry division attacks the friendly reinforced mechanized infantry brigade defensive position the player has fortified.
