Herbicide Orange Monitoring Program. Addendum 1
Abstract
In April 1970, the Secretaries of Agriculture; Health, Education, and Welfare; and the Interior jointly announced the suspension of certain used of 2, 4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T). This suspension resulted from published studies indicating that 2,4,5-T was a teratogen. Subsequent studies revealed that the teratogenic effects resulted from a toxic contaminant in the 2,4,5-T identified as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD). Subsequently, the Department of Defense suspended the use of Herbicide Orange, which contained 2,4,5-T. The Air Force Engineering and Services Center, Engineering and Services Laboratory began collecting water samples in November 1983 to examine 2,3,7,8-TCDD migration in surface water. This report is Addendum I to ESL-TR-83-56, Herbicide Orange Monitoring Program and contains all herbicide data collected at Eglin AFB FL, Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport MS, and Johnston Island Pacific Ocean. Sampling methods which were not published in ESL-TR-83-56 are described in this report. This report only contains raw data and site maps. No recommendations or conclusions are made in Addendum I.
