A Cultural Resources Survey for the Gregory County Pumped Storage Power Project Gregory County, South Dakota. Volume 1. Main Report.

Abstract

A Class III cultural resources survey was conducted by Gilbert/Commonwealth for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, to identify, record, and make recommendations on all cultural resources within a 3,226.5 acre area to be affected by the construction of the proposed Gregory County Pumped Storage Power Project, Gregory County, South Dakota. The project area is on the west bank of Lake Francis Case reservoir. A total of 17 sites--10 prehistoric and 7 historic--and 23 prehistoric isolated finds were recorded. The prehistoric sites consist of surface lithic scatters. The historic sites of 5 homesteads, 1 schoolhouse, and 1 road location. One prehistoric site is recommended for testing for National Register eligibility. Three historic sites are recommended for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, and the road or trail is recommended for further study.
