Word Lists to Limit Vocabulary in Technical Information.
Abstract
This report describes eight word lists for use as part of an automated publishing system for technical information. The lists were developed under sponsorship of the Naval Technical Information Presentation Program (NTIPP), which has been designated as the focal point for research and development in DOD's project to automate the production of technical information (TI). DOD policy required accurate, current, and comprehensible technical information (TI) to carry out a variety of functions supporting DOD weapons systems and equipment. One of the specific goals of NTIPP is to increase comprehensibility of TI. The eight word lists in this report were developed to help achieve this by simplifying vocabulary. The first is a revision of the common word list originally developed with CRES (Computer Readability Editing System). It represents the core vocabulary of junior Navy enlisted personnel.
