Evolution of Nonlinear Wave Groups on Water of Slowly-Varying Depth.

Abstract

This report develops a mathematical formulation which describes the evolution of non-linear wave groups in water of slowly varying depths. It summarizes the derivations of the appropriate equations and their solutions. An approximate analytical solution is provided giving the physical processes involved in the shoaling of wave groups. Also, included are calculations of the induced mean flow accompanying an envelope soliton moving on deepwater. Keywords: Water waves; Wave groups; Hydraulics; Shoaling water; Non-linear waves.
