Abstract
The research concerns domestic and international economic and political variables that are regional in origin and will hold constant the extraregional environment. For example, analysis of important trends in Japan (detailed in discussion papers A-5 to A-9) assumes no interruption in Japan's energy supplies because of the Gulf War. Secondly, it is assumed that by 'relative weight' what is meant is importance in terms of impact on American foreign policy in the region.
