A Study of Data Entry Keyboards: The 4 x 4 Keypad.

Abstract

Research concerning the layout of keypads for data entry was briefly surveyed to determine what conventions exist suitable for inclusion in MIL-STD-1280 (military standard on keyboard arrangements). The calculator layout (bottom-up) is preferable to the telephone layout (top-down). More research is needed to establish the best methods of denoting key mode selection. Industry conventions have dictated the location of function keys, but more research is necessary to verify these locations. Chord keyboards are an alternative, but they have specialized uses and are not recommended for low-skilled operators.
