The Interactive Generation of Alphanumerics and Symbology with Designs on the Future.

Abstract

This thesis investigated the available methods for implementing human-computer interfaces using sophisticated graphics systems, with the goal of designing and implementing an advanced graphics development environment. Such a developmental laboratory is necessary to support current and futuristic crew station design for display-oriented cockpits. The result of this effort was the development system - DESIGNS. The DESIGNS software system was tailored specifically for real-time, pilot-in-the-loop, research and development simulation. Critical features of such a system include fast turn-around time, and the capability to expand as enhanced tools are developed. The resulting system supports interactive development of heads-up and heads-down display symbology. It generates correct display formatting information for multiple target graphics devices. Future enhancements include rehosting to a more powerful workstation, preferably in Ada, and continued addition of graphics development tools supporting simulation needs. Additional keywords: real time; human factors engineering; DESIGNS(Display Environment Supporting the Interactive Generation of Alphanumerics and Symbology).
