Highlights of the Worldwide Survey of Alcohol and Nonmedical Drug Use among Military Personnel: 1982.

Abstract

In the Armed Forces the misuse of alcohol and the use of drugs for nonmedical purposes are recognized problems that impact on the state of military readiness essential to preserve the national security. Approaches to effective prevention, intervention and treatment, however, cannot be developed and executed without a clear understanding of the nature and extent of these problems. This suggests the need for comprehensive, broad based data about the prevalence of alcohol and nonmedical drug use and the adverse consequences resulting from such use. A systematic effort to obtain data that can be used to guide and evaluate program policies was begun in 1980 under the direction of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs). A series of recurrent surveys was instituted to study drug and alcohol abuse in the military. Results from these surveys will be used to assess various aspects of the drug and alcohol abuse prevention program elements, to examine the impact of current and future program policies, and to extend knowledge and understanding of drug and alcohol use and problems in the military.
