An Archeological Overview and Management Plan for the Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island County, Illinois.

Abstract

The Rock Island Arsenal is a 902-acre facility located on Rock Island, Illinois. The Arsenal has been in operation since 1863. The Arsenal was designated a Historic District in 1969 and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Extensive archeological work has been conducted on the facility in the form of pedestrian survey, boat-conducted reconnaissance, shovel testing, and documentary and archival research. In addition to standing building with historic architectural value, archeological sites including 12 known (nine historic, two prehistoric, and one multicomponent with historic and prehistoric evidence) as well as 36 potential archeological sites have been documented as having existed on the facility.
