Determining Economic Production Rates

Abstract

Present definitions fall short of describing the true nature of various production rates. Alternative definitions are proposed and optional procedures for determining various production rates are described. The procedures include theoretical models, data items, production rate reviews, task order contracting, and elective scheduling. Present scheduling techniques build in large variations in production rates which could impact unit cost. Where circumstances permit, it is recommended that bid and proposal preparation instructions specify the total delivery quantity, the months in which deliveries are to be made, and a request for the offer or to propose a least cost delivery schedule. Additional keywords; Production planning; Economic analysis; Army procurement; Weapons systems. (Author)
