Command and Control (C2) Survey of Short-Range Air Defense (SHORAD) Elements.

Abstract

Three versions of a short-range air defense command and control (SHORAD C2) questionnaire were developed based on issues identified in the system specification (MIS 34585) (ADCCS, 1985), the humand factors engineering statement (HFES) (Kurtz, 1985), and internal working papers on the proposed research. A survey was conducted with SHORAD platoons from the 1st Cavalry Division and the 2nd Armored Division taking part. The participants were surveyed about their experience and preferences for information requirements and for display design formats for the developmental SHORAD C2 system and voice-tell message formats for the manual system. Vulcan, Redeye, and Chaparral platoons from each division completed a fire unit version of the questionnaire. Two forward area alerting radar (FAAR) platoons, one from each division, completed a FAAR version and personnel from the air defense artillery (ADA) battalion (Bn) tactical operations center (TOC) completed a Bn version. Keywords include: Human factors; Short-Range Air Defense (SHORAD); Equipment design survey; Command and control (C2); Soldier-Machine interface; and Tactical displays.
