Analysis of Fluid Flow at Very High Reynolds Number around Smooth & Rough Circular Cylinders.

Abstract

Wind tunnel tests were performed in the 12-ft pressure wind tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center during the months of May and June 1982. The model is an instrumented circular cylinder of 31.65 cm (12.46 in) diameter. Surface roughness was varied using wire mesh screens. Steady pressures, unsteady pressures, and boundary layer profiles were measured in these tests. The data pertaining to these experiments were summarized in a previous report. The collected experimental data have been analyzed during the present contract period. The task of analyzing voluminous amount of data stored on magnetic tapes by NASA was divided between Alabama A&M Univ. and Physical Research Inc. who has been a participating subcontractor. The results of the analysis of the steady pressure distaributions are given in Part 1 of this document and the analysis of the boundary layer profiles and the corresponding plots are given in Part 2.
