Clear-Air Transmission in the 8 to 12-Micrometer Band at Selected Stations.

Abstract

Horizontal atmospheric transmission of energy in the 8 to 12-micrometer band is examined for distances of 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 10 km in four geographical regions. The only absorber to be considered is water vapor because it absorbs much more energy than any other molecular constituent of the atmosphere. Annual means are approximately 80 percent transmission along 1-km path at 5 German stations, at Osan, Korea, and at the Middle Eastern stations of Baghdad, Iraq, and Jerusalem, Israel. Annual means at Tel Aviv, Israel, and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, are a few percent lower, and the annual mean at Tehran, Iran, is a few percent higher. Annual mean transmissions in Central America are below 70 percent for a 1-km path at low-lying coastal stations and generally below 75 percent throughout the region. The annual cycle is weak in Central America, very strong at Osan, and intermediate at the remaining stations.
