An Analysis of Left and Right Wing Terrorism in Italy
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to analyze, in terms of intelligence principles, left and right-wing terrorism in Italy. Italian terrorism is deeply rooted in political and socio-economic developments of the post-World War II era. Teh events surrounding these developments were closely examined in an attempt to understand the rise of Italian terrorism. Teh second, but equally important purpose, was to present a study which applied indocaitons and warning analytical techniques to the terrorist problem in a given region. The scope of this thesis included a systematic revilew of significant evants peculiar to Italy's post-World War I years. Beginning with political and socio-ecomomic developments immediately following the war, events were taced and discussed through the violent outbreak of terrorism in Italy. Government countermeasures were identified in Italy's bid to cope with the terrorist menace. Indications and warning methods were applied to key events to better understand the phenomena of Italian terrorism. This analysis demonstrated that the methods may be successfully applied, with certain restraints. Additional application of I&W analysis other terrorist problems should be encouraged to strengthen the intelligenc base in this mostly untouched arena of analysis. The thesis concluded with a prognosis of the future directions of terrorism in Italy.
