A General Preparation of Tailored-Length Acetylene Terminated Resins from Low-Cost Bisphenols

Abstract

An Ullmann ether reaction of 1,3-dibromobenzene or 1,4-dibromobenzene has been carried out with three low-cost bisphenols in 2, 4, 6-collidine with cuprous or cupric oxide to afford bromine terminated oligomer mixtures of stoichiometrically tailored average lengths. The use of bis-phenol A, 4, 4' - thiodiphenol and resorcinol provided three families of bromine terminated oligomer mixtures which were subsequently converted in two steps to acetylene terminated matrix resin systems for composites. Column chromatographic separations on the resins were used both to characterize the oligomer composition and to isolate for identification the major impurities present. Thermoanalytical data was obtained on the uncured and cured resins. This preparative method was also used to synthesize a monoethynyl terminated reactive diluent from 3-phenoxyphenol.
