A Practical Application of LOTUS 1-2-3 (Trademark) in Construction Management.

Abstract

This report reviews some of the capabilities of a popular microcomputer (IBM PC) coupled with a popular software package (LOTUS 1-2-3), as these can be easily tailored to various aspects of the construction industry. It can be used as a tool by the owner or project manager and the builder or contractor. While each of these two major participants would be interested in some similar aspects of construction administration, their perspective and required data would necessarily be different. The report presents some uses for identifying, tracking and thereby controlling various aspects of the construction process. Examples are given using the spreadsheet and database capabilities of the LOTUS 1-2-3 program for managing project change orders, construction submittals and inventory control. Also included is a simple example of the graphics capability of LOTUS to illustrate the effectiveness of a pictoral representation of reported numbers.
