Basic and Applied Magnetism with a Squid Gradiometer.
Abstract
A facility was established to evaluate the magnetic signatures of cryocoolers, i.e., small closed-cycle liquid helium refrigerators, by use of a (superconducting) SQUID gradiometer. This gradiometer also was utilized to study the (1) threshold of Barkhausen emission and onset of hysteresis in iron, (2) detection of defects in metal pipes by remote sensing, and (3) magnetoelastic behavior in steel bars. Keywords: Superconductivity Quantum Interference devices.
