Relative - Humidity Parameterization of the Navy Aerosol Model (NAM)

Abstract

An improved relative-humidity parameterization is described for the lognormal size distributions used in the Navy aerosol model. Approximation formulas are developed for the geometric mean and standard deviation of the distributions for sea-salt, urban, and rural aerosols. The parameterization gives accurate predictions of the size dependence of the aerosol particles for a range in relative humidity from near 0% to 100%, and for dry particle sizes from 0.01 to 10 microns. By neglecting the Kelvin effect, the new formulas reduce to a form similar to the existing humidity parameterization. The range of applicability of the new formula and its reduced form for estimating extinction coefficients are established.
