Command Structure for Theater Warfare: The Quest for Unity of Command

Abstract

This Air Force study develops a recommended command structure. It examines United States Army, United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force, and joint and combined doctrinal statements concerning the employment of theater-assigned assets. This monograph develops an organizational structure that is designed to provide unified command of land, naval, and air assets assigned to a theater of operations as prescribed in Joint Chiefs of Staff Publication 2. It begins with a historical examination of the organization for the command and control of theater-assigned assets employed by the United States and its allies during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Conflict. Next, it reviews the current Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force views on theater warfare and discusses joint and combined doctrine fr a theater warfare organization.
