Calculations of Burning Surfaces of Propellant Grain with Embedded Metal Wires and of Internal Ballistics of Such Motor,

Abstract

The propellant grain with embedded metal wires and capable of producing two-stage thrusts, which suffers complex surface changes during the combustion process, will be analyzed in this paper. Seven pertinent items of this grain are summarized which are very useful for the studies of its complex burning surfaces and the derivation of its calculation formulas about the burning surfaces. The calculation formulas of burning surfaces and that of internal ballistics are combined to form a chain of control equations. With this control chain, the burning processes of different stage and phase can be predicted very accurately if a double iteration method which satisfies optimum control conditions is used. The entire calculation process is a very good simulation of combustion, and the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data.
