The Equation c(z)t = phi(zx)x: the Free Boundary Induced by a Discontinuity in the Derivative of c.

Abstract

The equation c(z)t - phi(zx)x arises in a theory for two interacting biological species that disperse in response to population pressure. We prove existence and uniqueness for this equation with appropriate initial and boundary conditions, and use these results to establish a solution, for arbitrary segregated initial-data, in which the two species remain segregated for all time.
